Hard driven Volvo
Wednesday, 28 April 2010
At Sheffield today, Paul Batten in the hard driven Volvo PV544 was asked if the Freestone FX was going to be a threat in the classic category. “Can’t really say at this stage as it is a bit too new to gauge.” In relation to his performance today, he had this to say. “ We are running softer compound tyres this year as opposed to last year and they seem to be doing the job but there is a lot of rally to go yet but it is still a handful to drive in the rain.”

The Mersey Lea Bridge frightened quite a few today, being incredibly slippery in the wet. But Paul’s father and navigator Mike Batten said “You can’t fool an old forest rally competitor with wooden bridges and we slowed right down for that one.”
However if their result today is anything to go by, the performance of the old Volvo is quite staggering as they are a mere 12 seconds behind the Broadbent Porsche 911 Carrera and showing a clean pair of heels to a slab of cars with theoretically much higher performance including another 6 Porsche Carreras.
